Full Moon-ness

14 Oct

Apparently, the official full moon was a few days ago…but, I beg to differ!

Evidence…

1. I woke up, stumbling to the bathroom while quieting swearing at my alarm (so not to wake up the hubs), at about 6am.  I don’t usually wear glasses for this short and typically uneventful trip.  Well, consider me served.

This chick almost stepped right onto a cockroach.  In the shower.  Naked (yes, that is how I choose to shower).

ugh, nastiness from here

SO, I ran (yup, still naked) to get my glasses and to get this…

from here

…to spray the crap out of it.  Mission accomplished.  But then I had to remove it from the shower (belly up, dead as a doornail).  So gross.  THEN, I got to shower while inhaling the fumes.  I’m pretty sure I’ll never be the same.

{sidenote: Scott was very proud that I didn’t wake him up to remedy this situation.  what a big girl I’ve become!}

2. I forgot to put on earrings.  HATE that.

3. I forgot my cell phone at home.  Yup – worstfeelingEVER.

4. I was visited by a super scary observer at work.  Then, in the middle of the observation…there was a fire drill (naturally!).

5. I stopped keeping track of the wackiness after that.  But, lemmetellya, this hair today is of full moon quality.

While searching for a picture of a palmetto beetle cockroach, I had a Halloween costume epiphany.  First – Scott’s, then – mine…check it out!

The sunglasses are a nice touch, no?

Did you have any full moon nonsense happen to you?

I truly believe in the lunar effect!

p.s. I really think I should be a palm tree for Halloween.  Suggestions on execution?

p.s.s. Have a GREAT weekend - I plan on it!  Tonight starts my birthday celebration week and a half.  Off to Closed For Business for drinks and then Theatre 99 for an improv show.  CAN’T wait!!!  (now – on to getting this hair under control)

Angel Oak

13 Aug

According to this website, “Angel Oak” is approximately 1,500 years old and reportedly the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi River.  Holy old tree, Batman!  It is located on John’s Island, about 30 minutes from our home/Daniel Island/Mt. Pleasant.

Although incredibly impressive to look at, this poor tree has seen better days.  It is held up and together by many cables and wooden posts.  That poor trunk and gigantic branches have survived lotsa hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and disturbance by stupid [ignorant] people.  Angel Oak was hit the hardest in 1989, when Hurricane Hugo reared his ugly head in Charleston.  Hence, his necessary man-made stilts.

3 Visiting Recommendations:

1. Don’t head to John’s Island just to see this sight!  There is nothing not much to see on Angel Oak’s campus.  There’s a little shop (that we did not feel inclined to browse), a metal fence, a porta potty or 2, and some picnic tables. Not.very.impressive.  Afterwards, go to Folly Beach (like we did on our anniversary this year), Kiawah Island (like we did!), or Wadmalaw Island (we MUST get there soon!).

2. Put on bug spray prior to exiting your car.  We put some on while under the tree.  Too late, my friends.  Wayyyy too late!  I believe I counted 14 fresh mosquito bites in 10 minutes (in addition to the 4 I acquired from Jaws at the aquarium).  I itched it up for days!

3. One visit is probably enough, so take lots of pictures.  At least I think once is enough for me.  Unless we’re hosting visitors that wanna check him out!

Happy Saturday, friends!

p.s. Anyone else have a lazy Saturday where their big comfy recliner was their bff?  No?  Nope, me neither.

p.s.s. Scott and my Dad brewed up some beer this morning.  Check out the hubby’s beerventures on his website – Charleston Craft Beer!

Bat Beetle

10 Jul

So there you have it, Northern friends.  THAT is a “palmetto beetle/bug” – - or to be more accurate – - a Southern cockroach.  I realize this picture is pretty terrible.  So, just to clarify, this little jerk was about the length of my middle finger (no coincidence)…but way fatter.  Its antennae were extremely long and it had a reddish tint.  Ew.  He was hanging out by the light in our coat/miscellaneous closet.

Scott knocked that sucker down, never to be seen again.  These ugly bugs are surprisingly quick and Batman-like.  I swear, it just disappeared!  So sly.  Please, I beg of you…no repeat of this experience!!!

So Charlestonians, what do you do when you find one of these bad boys in your home?  It’s very rare for us (thankfully), but we Scott usually captures it and brings it outside.  It seems like it would make a mess trying to kill them.  Am I wrong?

p.s. This isn’t far off from MY reaction when I see a “palmetto beetle.”
