July in Review

31 Jul

So I promised a blog a day in July…and somewhat made a liar out of myself.  I kinda changed the rules without consulting with you.  Are we fighting?

I missed a few days.  But in order to sleep soundly at night, I’ve given you 31 blogs in 31 days.  Good compromise, right?!  I thought so.

I really enjoyed this challenge.  So much that I think I’ve going to average 4-5 posts a week, on a normal week.  This is exciting news…for me anyway!  Who am I kidding – my getting-it-all-out-to-you helps my husband’s ears from bleeding on the daily from overstimulation.  Blogging has been deemed healthy for our relationship.  Extra super duper bonus for Scott?  It’s a FREE activity!  He’s one lucky man.

Haha from here

So, how’d I do?  Here are the most viewed posts from this month.  I wanna know – which post was your favorite?  Voting closes Wednesday, August 3rd.

Thanks for your participation!!!  Knowing what you like the most will help me to better sculpt the posts of the future.  Your input is important!!!

20 Question Survey

31 Jul

1. Name 3 things you are looking forward to:

  1. Our first trip to Kiawah Island this week!
  2. Having this Thanksgiving here in Charleston with my parents, brother, and brother in-law!
  3. The Bachelorette finale tomorrow night (goooo, JP)!

2. If you could have a dream come true, what would it be?

  • That I would be discovered as a writer so that I can work and be a Mom (someday) from home (all while being the best wife ever).  I would even put time into enjoying the whole cooking thing.  What?  One can dream!

3. You have $200.  You have to spend it on yourself, you can’t donate it, and it can’t be something you actually need.  What will it be?

  • Shoot, this is hard!  (Goes to show that this doesn’t happen often – ha!) Imma say – a day at the spa!!!  Truth be told…it’s something that I may actually need.  Maybe a one-way plane ticket for my BFF Lisa to get her skinny butt down here?!  That would be money well spent on myself!

4. What helps to pull you out of a bad mood?

  • Blaring music and silly dancing with the hubster.  Yes, we do that.  Cupcakes from Cupcake.  The beach (it’s practically impossible to be in a bad mood at the beach).  Also, reality TV always makes me feel better about myself!

5. What is your bedtime routine?

  • Nothing out of the ordinary.

6. If you are currently in a relationship, how did you meet your significant other?

  • At work.  Who ever said that was a big no-no?  Worked out pretty well for us!  Thank you, Big Brothers Big Sisters! ♥

7. What kind of books do you read?

  • I love Jodi Picoult and read some books that are “on trend” at the time (could not get through The Help for some reason, though).  Otherwise, my obsession with celebrities/”reality” continues on through to my book selections – Tori Spelling, Chelsea Handler, etc., etc. (a book blog re: my summer reading to come soon!).  Absolutely no nonfiction books for me. Still scarred from college reading, I think!

8. How do you see yourself in 10 years?

  • HOW do I see myself?  Um, in a skinny mirror with soft lighting?  No likey this question.

9. What’s your fear?

  • I feel like I might substantiate true fear by talking about it – so I’ll go with…that I need to get braces again someday due to my irresponsible retainer behaviors.  Damn, that would stink!

Metal-mouthed with an attitude – hot!

10. Would you give up all junk food for the rest of your life for the opportunity to see outer space?

  • Not a chance.  No dice.

11. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

  • Fumble for my glasses and check the time on my phone.

12. If you could change one thing about your significant other, what would it be?

  • ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!  (Okay, maybe that he would actually close all doors and drawers when he’s done with them instead of leaving them ajar. But if not, I will continue to love him the same anyway!)

13. If you could pick a new name for yourself, what would it be?

  • That’s just weird…I’m def a Sarah.

14. If you had to choose between six months of sun or six months of rain, what would you choose?

  • Um, I’m pretty sure I’ve already made this decision (but versus snow).  SUN SUN SUN!!!

15. If you could only eat one thing for the next 6 months, what would it be?

  • Hmmm…Scott’s special popcorn (almost 7 years and I’m still not sick of it!).

16. What is the thing you enjoy about blogging the most?

  • The comments and love that I get…it’s positive reinforcement – so thanks, loves!

17. Do you prefer salty or sweet foods?

  • Both and sometimes together (love me some chocolate-covered pretzels)!

18. What items are in your purse right now?

  1. A first-aid kid of sorts – Aleve, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, bandaids, neosporin
  2. Beauty products – lotion, mirror, blotting papers (girl’s skin is REALLY shiny in hot weather), Tide Stick, hand sanitizer, 4 lip glosses, chapsick, multiple size and colored bobby pins, hair ties
  3. Camera & phone
  4. Wallet & Cupcake stamp card
  5. Post-its and pen

19. If you had to choose between vacationing at the beach or in the mountains where would you go?

  • Again, I think it’s pretty obvious – BEACH BEACH BEACH!

20. What do you watch on television that you know you shouldn’t?

  • Well that’s a loaded question!  I’d have to say what I’m MOST ashamed of is being obsessed with 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom.  Listen – I’m only human (and how could you NOT love that lil Bentley?!).

More Evidence!

Another Charleston-style accolade, courtesy of Yahoo! Travel.  Check it out…

The Coolest Small Cities in America; Eight Reasons to Downsize Your Next Vacation.

Oddly enough, they mentioned Hominy Grill.  What a coinkydink!

My favorite quote, though?

Southern hospitality extends to the water: You won’t find friendlier locals on the East Coast.”

p.s. We officially have visitors set up for the beginning of September – yay! The rest of ya…your loss!!!

Hominy Grill

30 Jul

Last week, the 4some checked out the famed Hominy Grill in downtown Charleston.  I was super excited to check it out, since it is a definite Charleston staple eatery.  Check out some of their claims to fame…

They are mostly infamous for their “shrimp & grits” and their “big nasty” (biscuit with fried chicken breast, cheddar cheese, and sausage).

Hominy Grill has always been on TV shows such as “No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain,” ”$40 a Day with Rachael Ray,” “Man vs. Food” and “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” – Chocolate Edition.  Here’s a grainy video from the last show mentioned.  It’s squint-worthy (skip to second :30).

We went to Hominy Grill on their first night reopened after some renovations.  It was supposed to reopen on July 20th.  Instead, this was their post on Facebook that day…

Ha!  Their renovations included expanding their outdoor area, adding a bar inside, adding a drive-thru sort of window for people to get drinks while waiting for their table on the patio (genius!) or food to-g0, a larger dining room, and additional bathrooms.  That’s what we concluded from the buzz about restaurant, anyway!

Mom, Scott, and I ordered the “shrimp & grits.”  My Dad got some shrimp special that he was oohing and aahing over.  We were all pretty happy campers!  The service wasn’t fast or slow – just right in the middle.  Our waiter had a lot of character…it seemed like he really wants to be a stand-up comic but is still waiting for his big break.  We enjoyed his humor!  The food was quite delicious and the portion size was just right.  Negatives?  Well, they may have rushed the reopening a bit.  They only had 2 beers available (Scott was ready to walk out – haha!) and they were out of sauvignon blanc.  For dessert, everyone but me ordered the famous chocolate pudding.  I excitedly ordered a dessert (that I can’t remember the name of) that they were ultimately out of, as well.  I got red velvet cake instead and it was kind of a letdown.  Maybe a few more days closed would’ve given them some time to, um, restock their inventory.  Other than that, no complaints!  We’d definitely go again!!!

Loved this!

I’m excited to check out more Charleston must-eat restaurants.  There are so many…but, I’m up for the challenge!!!

p.s. 3 more blogs between now and midnight tomorrow night (July 31st).  Get ready!

p.s. Had our first, true “reaalllly?” experience at the pool today.  I hope that family crawls right back under the rock they came out of for the rest of pool season.  That or their swipe card stops working.  Ugh.

Something’s Missing

30 Jul

When I first started my new job in Charleston, I made a fast friend.  Her name, like a handful of my other friends, is Jen.  I even wrote about how I really wasn’t looking for a new Jen friend, but that you can’t mess with what’s meant to be.  Jen is from Jersey (she’ll tell you it’s the “classy” Jersey, not the fist-pumping Jersey), so we were both Northern transplants freshly new in the South.  We hit it off and now Jen is one of my closest friends.

One small problem.  She already left the Chucktown.  =(

Jen – good luck back up in the North!  I will be sure to brag to you about the winter, the food, and the *charming* city until the end of time.  However, I know you will not miss the “palmetto beetles,” the beaches (you never went, you crazy person!), or the drivers.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR NEW ADVENTURE…I am so happy for you!!!

Your @ss better visit often!!!

SUCH a dream team!  (Yes, I really posted this picture – ha!)

No one else can leave me at the moment…I’m too fragile.  Do you hear me, friends?!

p.s. I am currently taking applications for a Jen friend who lives in the South. Anyone?

p.s.s. Jen – miss you already!!!

Flashback Friday

29 Jul

As I mentioned in my last post, I spent quite some time cleaning out “memory bins” (that were still housed in NY) this week.  LARGE bins, to be exact.  I, thank goodness, have come to my senses (while simultaneously appeasing my husband) in the “I just can’t get rid of it…yet” department.  I have realized that the “yet” portion of the show makes more work for me later and often times “yet” never really materializes.  This causes clutter, wreaks havoc, and makes me feel unorganized.  SO. OVER. IT.  So in case you haven’t figured it out yet, the small pile was the keeper pile…

Go ME!!!

Now for the hilarity!

I have lots to share.  In order to make you really want it, I’m going to spread it out over a few “Flashback Fridays.”  Enjoy!

#1 – This had to be from middle school (when making 4-way folded cards were so in)…

Nice touch with the beer mug.  Nice Touch.

#2 – My bossy request order to “laundry doers” to wash my jeans the right way.  I’m pretty sure I was ordered requested to begin doing my own laundry soon thereafter…

Wow – very serious about those L.E.I. bellbottoms!

#3 – A hot concert I attended.  Not my first, though.  That was MC Hammer (ohhh yeah – “you can’t touch this!”).

Look how cheap – $30!

#4 – I’ve always been obsessed with making spelling count…

Mrs. Melanson – the most all-business 5th grade teacher at Lisha Kill Middle School!

I’m gonna stop there to save some embarrassing must-sees for next week’s “Flashback Friday.”  Don’t miss it!

Do you have trouble getting rid of junk items from your past? Anyone else want to keep every single greeting card they’ve ever been given (it’s a sickness)?  What’s the weirdest thing you still have from growing up?  C’mon – spill it!  We can be embarrassed together!!!

p.s. Scott and I checked out our brand new (like today-new) Trader Joe’s this afternoon and loved it!  Didn’t take any pics though…I was too overwhelmed with excitement.  We got some 2 3 Buck Chuck (perfect for Chucktown!) and some other randomness.  Excited to get back there next week!

p.s.s. Anyone else in shock that July is almost over?!  Ahhhh!

3 Weeks and Holy Memories

27 Jul

I’m majorly sleepy.

My parents’ stuff getting here from NY meant that 3 large bins of my childhood were arriving here, too.  That automatically meant cleaning out all existing bins and closets to make room for said binned-up childhood memorabilia.  Thank goodness we’ve had a couple of rainy days.

The really fun part was going through these bins o’ “I-still-have-that?”  Check out the mess below.  Get ready for some awesomely-dork-like-wow finds in a later post.  I’m scanning those babies in.  It’s going to be SO worth the wait!  (And you thought my blinking post was embarrassing!!!)

Meanwhile, take a look at Spunky Treester…

So she’s a little lopsided at the moment.  Give her time…nobody’s perfect!  I still think she’s GORG and growing on the regular.  Ahhh…ya know, it’s so nice not to have to worry about your little one alll of the time.  ;)

p.s. Notice Scott’s shirt in pic #1?  Someone’s excited that there’s actually going to be an NFL season this year…go G-Men!

p.s.s. Which pile do you think was the keep pile vs. the chuck pile?  Hmm…

Southern Thesaurus — Entry #8

On the Verge/About to/Preparing to/Planning on/Getting Ready to = Fixin’

That’s right.  It’s a verb.

As in – “I’m fixin’ to get some lunch” or “I’m fixin’ to go to the beach” or “I’m fixin’ to fix my truck, because it quit.”  Or maybe not that last one.  Got a little carried away.

According to this shirt, Texas really likes this saying as well!

via here

Right now I’m fixin’ to watch a 2-hour commercial-filled fun-filled Bachelorette with a big ol’ bowl of Scotty’s famous popcorn!!!  (I think Constantine’s out, like Seacrest.)

Seriously though, I hope I never say “fixin’.”  The North wins this one – without a doubt!

p.s. I owe you another blog.  Maybe I’ll work on it during The Bachelorette’s gazillion commercials!

p.s.s. Once I get to Southern Thesaurus entry #10, I’m quizzing your @$$es.  So you better study up, kids!

AND They’re Settled…Well, Sorta!

22 Jul

Mom and Dad are IN!  Ummmm, how happy do they look?!?!?!?!

A little sassy even!

Their truck was supposed to come on Wednesday.  However, due to a little office-in-NY mixup, it came yesterday.  God bless the 4 men (2 of which moved US into OUR home almost a year ago!) who moved 7,000 something pounds up and down stairs in 97° heat.  What a crazy hard job!  A shout out to Eduardo (he prefers to be called “Homie,” but I just can’t) and his crew – you were the best! (FYI: Homie is SO not reading this.)

Things were too messy hectic at the house yesterday for Mom and Dad to sleep there, but tonight might be the night!  Mom is an ninja at unpacking.  And Dad? He’s good at hiding.  Haha – just kidding, Dad (kinda).  The place looks GREAT and the new furniture looks AWESOME, thanks to Mom’s cut-out-$1 store wrapping paper-in-the-same-size-as-the-furniture-to-figure-out-how-it’ll-look-while-at-the-closing technique.  See…

You should’ve seen their realtor/our friend’s reaction to that trickery!  We are crazy creative!  (Yes – creative, too!)

That’s right, $herdog and John at Young House Love, why didn’t you think of that?!  Haha.

CONGRATULATIONS on your new digs, Mom and Dad!  Welcome to the neighborhood!!!

p.s. I’m brewing up the idea of a “Mom and Dad’s Corner” of the blog.  They’re newbies in the South, too, and they lived in the North much longer than we did!  Name ideas for their “corner?!”

p.s.s. I loved my friend Sean’s post on Facebook today (we went to the same high school in NY, but he now lives in Chucktown) – “Everyone up north is complaining about the crazy heat wave. Funny I call it June through August.”
