Over the summer, Scott and I visited the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market once or twice. We were immediately lured to the pickle table (free sample? yes, please!) where we were asked if we wanted to try a pickled okra. “A pickled what-was-that,” we thought. Okra. Well, okra dokra – why not?! When the cost of something (anything) is zippo, we’re pretty open! And so, our obsession with pickled okra began.
I know my Northern friends may or may not have ever heard of okra (I hadn’t until our move to the South). Well, let me tell you the little that I know. But first, watch this creepy, barely informative video for kids.
So yes, a synonym for “okra” is “lady’s fingers” (typically outside of the U.S.). Not to be confused with yummy lady finger cake. Nope, not even close. Apparently, okra is a tall tropical Asian plant. It has green pods on it which are the edible parts. Check it out…
So this morning, we went to Downtown Charleston to check out their Farmers Market. We had heard wonderful things about it (I’m not sure why it took us so long to get there!). We had one mission and one mission only: PICKLED OKRA. And, oh yes – MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! This is what it looks like pickled.
We bought some raw okra to [attempt] to
cook grill. Scott took care of this. He rinsed them and then seasoned them with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Here’s the before and after…
It wasn’t too bad. It tasted a little like zucchini to me (which I love). BUT, the texture of the inside was a little slimy (think pumpkin insides – but not nearly as bad). So I liked the taste, but didn’t love the texture.
We’ll Scott will cook it up another way next time and we’ll see how it goes. I’m not giving up on okra just yet!
Here are a few pics of the Farmers Market. I highly recommend going if you get the chance! Parking was a little tricky (so was the bathroom situation) and my allergies went a little bonkers afterwards (there was a dog show there this week), but I cannot wait to go again. Nothing beats fresh vegetables, great people-watching, live music, and being outside on another gorgeous Charleston day!
p.s. I HATE brussel sprouts and LOVE broccoli. I know someone who LOATHES peas!!! What veggies do you love and hate? Have you ever tried okra?
